Barking

Aggression is a natural instinct dogs use to regulate their relations among them and with other animals. They react with aggressive behavior when they feel threatened; this is the main reason why in a domestic environment an aggressive maltese behavior can become a problem.

The aggressive maltese behavior is the most frequent reason for consultation in relation to maltese dog’s problems, because it is of great concern to maltese dog owners and to this we must add that children are often the most frequent victims because they can’t recognize when a dog is going to attack.

Knowledge of body language of dogs can often prevent an attack. The same applies in cases in which aggression is directed to family members caused by a hierarchy conflict. In these cases it is vital to know how to set the rules that keep harmony to avoid this type of aggression.

The source of aggressive behavior in dogs

Usually an aggressive maltese starts when your dog is about 6 weeks, and that is the time when you should start training your dog by socializing with people and other dogs, this socializing period lasts about 8 weeks, but it can extend a few more weeks. During this period do not use hard discipline with your dog, instead try to correct your dog gently. Remember that punishing your dog can cause an aggressive behavior in your dog. Most veterinarians agree that by the 14 weeks of your dog’s age, the puppy need to be properly socialized with people and other dogs to avoid any aggressive behavior.

7 Simple Ways to Work Your Dog’s Brain and Train Maltese Dogs

One of the most common issues Maltese dog owners have is that they don’t keep their dogs busy enough. When your Maltese gets bored, they get destructive and when a dog gets destructive, its owners get mad.

But, most of the time, the cycle is avoidable if you just spend some time exercising your dog’s mind and body. Here are seven tips I feel will help you keep your furry friend active and happy, and hopefully stop him from chewing up your rug.

1. Test Them – Google "canine iq" test and you’ll find a series of tests that you can give your dog that will test how smart they are. The actual results are less important than the testing process. The tests themselves make fantastic exercises that work your dog’s mind.

They also provide you a fantastic way to assert yourself as the alpha member of the pack and to spend some quality time bonding with your dog. Most dogs will do well at these exercises, but even if they do not, they are working their brain – a very good thing.

2. Problem Solving Skills – Give your dog a few small problems to solve throughout the day, along the same lines as the exercises above. You can hide peanut butter inside a toy, or put treats into stuffed animals, or dig bones in the yard.

It doesn’t need to be a MENSA test, but small puzzles are not only fun to watch them work out, but fantastically effective in working their doggie brains.

3. Obedience Train Maltese – Basic obedience training is extremely engaging and highly effective in working your dog’s problem solving skills. It takes a lot of mental energy to follow your commands, perform tricks and recognize commands.

4. Teach them New Tricks – Basic commands are one thing, but advanced tricks are highly engaging. Some dogs may be better suited to this than others, but if your dog is particular intelligent, challenge them with tricks that they wouldn’t otherwise perform.

You can teach them to identify different toys between multiple options, have them dig up different toys, or have them track down certain scents in your backyard, all great dog tricks.

5. Work for Everything – A dog should never get anything for free. As animals, dogs not only expect but enjoy having to work for things like their meals, food, and attention. Whenever you feed your dog, give him water, or sit to pet him, make him sit, stay, lay down, or whatever other tricks you’d have him do.

6. Performing their "Job" – Most breeds are bred for a particular job. To really work their brains, put their breeding to the test. Have sled dogs pull, sheep dog herd, and hunting dogs track. This will satisfy a deep desire to work while also working their brains.

You’ll be shocked how effective these working tasks can be in burning through the excess energy your dog has.

7. Exercise and Agility – Basic exercise is not necessarily effective in working your dog’s brain, but it has a similar effect, putting their entire body to the test and making sure they wear themselves out a bit.

Almost every breed of dog has been worked and reworked over the centuries to complete a job. They like to be challenged and they like to think. As dog owners, it is our duty to constantly challenge our pups and give them specific tasks to complete.

10 Toys that Dogs LOVE

Had it with your dog gnawing on your favourite leather shoes? Then it’s probably time to find your dog a toy they will really love. Luckily, there are plenty of other dog owners who have been down this road before and mapped out which toys will make your dog’s tail wag.

1. Kong Toys – You’ll love this toy as much as your dog does. Kong actually makes quite a few toys, but the one thing they all have in common is that they are highly durable and made to last. The best ones are the thick rubber snowman shaped toys that you can stuff treats in.

You may find that smarter dogs will grow bored with these, and can get the treats out very quickly. If so, consider a squeaking one to keep them occupied.

2. Frost Bite Frisbees – A standard Frisbee is actually a little dangerous for your dog. The plastic can splinter and break in their mouths and easily be swallowed. Frost Bite Frisbees are pliable and will puncture instead. It also works very well in cold weather, so it won’t break if you leave it outside.

3. Squirrel Plushes – There are a few toys like this, but the idea is the same. You have a plush toy with stuffed animals hidden inside of it. Your dog must work to free the squirrels, or whatever other plushes are in there. Very good for easily bored dogs.

4. Laser Pointers – Some dogs are too smart for these, and others will get a little too fixated, but if yours is in between, a laser pointer can be a lot of fun as you run a little red light across the wall.

5. Nylabones – These rubber chew bones are very popular because they can withstand even the strongest jaws and because they are good for your dog’s teeth. They can be frozen as well and peanut butter sticks to them to draw your dog’s attention.

6. Tug Toys – Any form of tug toy is popular, but there are some that you should watch out for. The ropes are iffy with some saying they are good for the dog’s teeth, but others warning that dogs can swallow the rope.

I like to stick with Kongs or Toss-a-Lot. It’s basically a pair of rubber balls wrapped in canvas with a few strands of canvas or nylon at the end. They’re border indestructible and are easy to use as a tug toy. They also squeak, which your dog will love.

7. Puzzle Toys – Any toy that works as a puzzle is a good one. These puzzle toys will work your dog’s brain as he gets the treats out, works through a series of ropes or pulls apart something to get to a plush in the middle. The Leo is a good example of a smart dog toy.

8. Squirrel Dude – This is a little rubber chew toy, like a Kong, but with a timer that pops out treats every now and then. Want to see your dog worship a toy? This will have him begging a piece of plastic for the next treat.

9. Tuffies – Stuffed animals are no nos for dogs – the stuffing is dangerous, and the buttons and other bits and pieces can break off in their mouths. However, tuffies are built especially for dogs and have ratings designed to match different levels of destructive dog.

10. Motorized Balls – Any kind of ball or toy that runs itself along the floor will keep your dog busy. There are ones with flashing lights, sounds, or little toys being pulled along after it. Most dogs are enamoured with these, though some merely get bored or upset by them.

What kinds of toys your dogs enjoy will depend largely on the type of dog you have, their energy level, and how easily they can be scared by flashing lights. Most dogs will love just about any of the toys on this list, but use your own judgement as well. You know best which toys will make your dog happy.

Ah, the dreaded Maltese bark problem. If you’ve taken a stroll down a residential street any time recently, you’ve likely run into this very issue – a seemingly endless number of dogs that just won’t stop barking.

If your own dog fits the bill, it can be incredibly frustrating trying to figure out how to make it stop.

But, barking doesn’t have to be just another thing "every dog does". Sure, barking is a natural activity that any healthy dog will do, and it’s never going to cease completely. But, it can get out of hand and there are some very specific things you can do to cut it down.

The Root of Maltese Bark Problems

If you really want to control Maltese bark problems, you’d better know why your Maltese dog is barking. Different types and sources of barking require different solutions.

1. Boredom – This is the most common source of barking and can be solved with some extra exercise or attention.

2. Anxiety – You need to teach your dog to handle your departure more calmly. This is a long process, but well worth it for the quiet and the health of your dog.

3. Warning – A dog should always bark at strangers or threats, but only to a certain point.

4. Attention Seeking – A dog in want of attention will bark at times. Never respond to this behaviour or you will only reinforce it.

5. Startled – A dog that gets scared or startled may bark in confusion.

6. Playfulness – Playful dogs will bark at times to show their excitement. This is completely normal.

7. Communicating – Dogs use barking to communicate with each other, saying "I’m here". This is normal, but shouldn ot be allowed to persist too long.

Obviously, some of these issues should not be changed. You don’t want your dog thinking it’s not okay to bark if they sense an intruder at the door. But, at the same time, you don’t want them barking for an hour when the neighbour comes home each day.

Stopping the Barking

Getting rid of a Maltese bark starts every time with basic control of your Maltese dog. You need to give your dog a strong alpha leader they can follow and no reasons to test your leadership. The best way to do this is to be consistent with your commands and to train them.

If you train your dog to come, lie down and stay, they will be very focused on completing those tasks and often times will stop barking completely. Additionally, you’re going to want to give your dog as much exercise as possible. Exercise can make a tremendous difference as well.

In fact, most dogs that are bored or underexercised will just bark to bark. It may not even make sense. And because we don’t make the connection ourselves, it can be hard to reverse the trend.

In terms of what not to do, avoid using the "No" word. Yelling at your dog will usually make it worse. The dog either doesn’t understand and barks in frustration or will think you’re barking along with it and get even louder.

Additionally, avoid punishment or rewarding of bad behaviour. You should instead only reward good behaviour. If you give your dog a "stop" phrase and they use it when you tell them to stop barking, reward them with a treat.

Finally, never give your Maltese dog loving attention when they bark. They will start to believe that they were right in barking at whatever they barked at – only furthering their anxiety or nervousness that bred the behaviour.

If you do it right, it can be easy to overturn a strongly instilled desire to bark. Just be consistent and take control of your home and your dog will quickly stop Maltese bark problem.

Maltese Separation Anxiety

One of the most common problems I hear from fellow dog owners is the incredibly stressful case of Maltese separation anxiety. Dogs with separation anxiety can turn into nervous wrecks, and as owners, we don’t know what to do.

We still need to go to work, buy groceries, and take care of our children. So, what can we do to train our dogs that it is okay when we leave, that we will return and they needn’t worry? It’s a tricky science with many people voicing their opinions.

But, in the end, it comes down to simply being there for your dog and not supporting their behaviour with reinforcement.

The Danger of Maltese Separation Anxiety

To start with, separation anxiety is often mistaken for excitement. When you return home and see your dog bouncing around wagging its tail, you probably assume that they are just very happy to see you. This may be the case, but it can also be a sign of excitability – the result of anguish they felt before.

That anguish comes about when they are left alone -
some part of their canine instincts flashing that they are being abandoned, a death knell to dogs. You shouldn’t feel guilty about leaving your dog. Most dogs can handle it perfectly well, and even those with anxiety can be retrained.

But, if you ignore it or allow them to continue showing that excitement, it is bad for their health. Not only can it progress to full blown depression and anxiety which hurts the heart, but it can result in destruction around your home.

Why Maltese Separation Anxiety

On a very basic level, Maltese separation anxiety is due to a dog’s pack mentality. If they are left alone, they feel that they have been dropped from the pack. But, on a more immediate level, your dog is anxious because you have not clearly shown them that you are a solid, in command pack leader.

In the wild, a pack leader may often leave the pack for a time to hunt or scout ahead. If your dog sees you leave and gets upset, they very well might see you as a follower, and themselves as an alpha leader.

Your job is to take control of the situation and show them that you are not only the leader of your pack, but that you will return every time you leave. Dogs that openly accept their owner as pack leader are infinitely less stressed and anxious. They can trust in you to deal with the issues at hand.

Of course, not all separation anxiety is as complicated as a pack leader dilemma. Sometimes, it can be simply due to a lack of exercise. A dog that does not get enough exercise simply becomes agitated when you leave and will keep themselves busy while you’re gone by destroying your home.

The easiest way to handle Maltese separation anxiety is to make sure your dog gets a real walk before you leave – at least 30 minutes of solid walking. You should also walk your dog after you’ve returned home and waited the 15 minutes before greeting.

Giving Your Dog What She Needs

Good dog ownership consists of giving your dog what she needs, and not what she wants. This may sound cruel, but in reality, by treating your dog as a dog and not as a human being, you will provide them with the stable, protected environment she craves.

She will be able to relax when you leave and you’ll know that your $200 shoes are still intact every day when you return home.

There are many common forms of dog aggression, the following Maltese training tips which include aggression around the food bowl, around people and other dogs, some dogs are aggressive towards children, others are fine around people that they know, but are nasty towards strangers.

An aggressive dog is a scary dog and in almost any household, having one just won’t do. You cannot allow your dog to control your home when you should be the active pack leader. So, as soon as you see the signs of aggressive behaviour, use some of the following Maltese training tips to cut it off immediately.

1. Take the Alpha Position – Not always, but much of the time, a dog’s aggressive behaviour is an attempt to take control of the household, challenging you for alpha leadership. Even if your dog isn’t challenging you, having a clear pack order can make it much easier for both of you.

Step up, make clear commands, train your dog carefully and show him that you are in fact the one in charge all of the time. Even if it doesn’t get rid of the aggressive behaviour, it will often make it far easier to control.

2. Separate Problem Dogs – If you have more than one dog or if your dog has an issue with this food dish, remove the issue from the dog. Two dogs that fight over food should be fed in separate rooms. Dogs that cannot walk together should be taken out separately.

Don’t worry – these are rarely permanent solutions. Rather, they work as short term stopgaps to keep from
having a more serious issue in your home.

3. Obedience Training – Along the same lines as your alpha position, it can be a good idea to send your dog to obedience Maltese training tips where they will learn to follow specific commands and respect your authority.

4. Keeping Them Occupied – Some dogs grow aggressive based on their lack of things to keep them occupied. Boredom, excess energy, a lack of focus, or simple anxiety can all lend toward aggression.

The problem is easy enough to fix. Just give your dog attention (but only when they are behaving – never reinforce the aggression), along with enough exercise and toys to keep them busy when you’re away.

5. Medical Checkup – It’s unlikely, but sometimes an aggression issue can be related to a dog’s health. If your dog is ill or is simply not getting the nutrients he needs from his food, you should consider taking him to the vet to rule out any potential illness.

6. Lots of Exercise and Good Food – Supplement all the hard work you’re doing by keeping your dog well exercised and supplied with good food. If your dog eats only the cheapest store brand dog food, it may not be causing the aggression, but a lack of nutrients can exacerbate it.

7. Avoid Triggers – If you know something triggers aggression avoid it. Your dog might not like children or might have issues with dogs when on a leash, or might lack the control to stay in line when a big truck goes by. Keep him away from these negative stimuli as much as possible.

8. Reduce Fear in His Life – Fear can be a strong driving force for aggression as well. To minimize fear in your dog’s life, don’t use negative punishment to curb behaviours. Correct behaviors rather than punishing them.

Additionally, don’t reinforce any existing phobias by giving your dog attention or extra care when they act upset. This will only tell them that there is something powerful to be afraid of and that their fear is warranted.

9. Hire a Dog Trainer – If all else fails, turn to a professional. There are many dog trainers who are well versed in handling problem animals before something serious happens. Don’t wait until it’s already too late. Contact a trainer now to teach you Maltese training tips.

Unlike so many other dog behaviour problems, aggression is a serious concern that should be handled immediately. It can lead to much worse behaviours, possible biting or attacks, and a generally uncomfortable household. If your dog suffers from aggression, see to it immediately.

Great Treats for Dogs

There’s nothing greater than being able to make your dog bounce around in pleasure when you give them a special treat. However, some people give out entirely too many treats or treats that may taste good, but can cause a number of health problems.

I’m not saying to cut out the treats – by all means, reward your dog for the behaviours you’re happy with, and let them indulge a little bit now and then. However, there are treats that can be good for your dog in more ways than just emotional response.

What to Avoid

First, there are some treats you should avoid. Don’t give your dog table scraps as treats. They can be dangerous for them in many ways. Something as innocuous as garlic powder can cause digestive problems for your dog.

In addition, human food is often much fattier than a dog needs and can cause a number of organ problems, from fat in the liver to a weakened or enlarged heart, or even canine diabetes. Generally speaking, if it’s not made for a dog, they probably shouldn’t be eating it.

In addition to table scraps, cheap, high fat biscuits and cookies can be good for very occasional treats, but given on a daily basis, they can result in health problems across the board for a dog. You need to avoid any treat that has high fat contents or is full of fillers like corn or wheat.

Other things to avoid include ham bones, pig ears (due to salmonella risks), and high fat cookies, especially if they are allergic to any grains which are heavily used in them.

The Good Stuff

So, what kind of treats is your dog going to do backflips for? There are a few good ones that I have found to be extremely effective. Here is a short list.

* Stuffed Kong Toys – Kong toys are fantastic toys in that they can be chewed for years and hold up to the punishment. What’s more, you can put peanut butter, meat chunks, or treats in them to drive that chewing.

* Ice and Frozen Treats – Unless your dog has dental problems, they love ice. Ever see a dog go at a snow bank? Somewhere in them is hardwired the desire to devour frozen water. The best part – it’s free and extremely healthy, though a bit messy at times.

* American Rawhide – Rawhide is a great treat and dogs love it, but you should be careful. First, make sure it is pressed rawhide so big chips don’t come off when they chew it. Second, make sure it is American as there has been some talk in the past about arsenic poisoning.

* Heavy Bones – Some bones are okay, if you watch your dog while they eat them. We’re talking about heavy, large, beef bones. Anything that can break or chip should be avoided – mainly anything else, especially ham bones.

* Jerkies – Dried meats are a great treat as they don’t have too many additives, reduce choking risks and are safe to feed to them in any circumstances. They also make good training treats because they can be broken up into small pieces easily.

Whenever looking for a treat, make sure to find treats that are limited in fillers and artificial anything. Organic, grain fed meets from the US are always best to ensure they have been properly handled, and don’t have anything in them that could make your dog sick.

In the end, a good treat is a must have for any dog owner, so be careful, research carefully, and always get something your dog likes.
